Making Friends

Every year, we ask Year 6 pupils what they're most worried about before starting secondary school.

Making new friends is nearly always one of the top answers!

The good news is that thousands of children start secondary school every September feeling exactly the same. Many pupils won't know anyone in their tutor group, so everyone is looking to make new friends.

What Year 7 Students Told Us

"I thought everyone else already had loads of friends... but they didn't!"

⭐ "I made friends on my very first day just by talking to the person next to me."

⭐ "Joining a lunchtime club helped me meet people with the same interests."

⭐ "By the end of my first week, I already had a group of friends to spend break and lunchtime with."

⭐ "Don't worry if you don't make your best friends on the first day. Friendships grow over time."

🎯 Top Tips
  • 😊 Smile and say hello to people in your class.

  • 👥 Remember that lots of other pupils are looking for new friends too.

  • 🎨 Join a club or lunchtime activity if your school offers them.

  • 🤝 Be yourself – real friendships take time to grow

  • 💬 Don't be afraid to start a conversation with someone new.

🌟 Remember...

You don't have to make all your friends on the first day. Every Year 7 has been in your shoes, and friendships grow over time. Be yourself, be kind and give yourself time to settle in.
